We have been taught to reach for the medicine cabinet whenever we feel not right, but medicine always has some sort of side effect, manily because they are made with fillers and binding agents that your body has no idea how to process. We should see the food that we eat as our path to wellness, because again, we are what we eat. Ayerveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine understand this and they treat illness by recommending changes in diet based on your individual constitution and the different qualities of food. For example, if you have heartburn, it suggests that there is an excess of heat in the body, so they would recommend something cooling as a way to create balance.
Why all three of these things together? Well because you can make a tea with all three of these superfoods (my opinion) in it so they all kind of compliment one another. When my stomach starts to bother me, or I feel like I need to detox, I grab these three ingredients and they usually solve the problem.
Lemon- If your digestion is bogging you down, a daily drink of lemon water first thing in the morning can help ease your troubles. There are minerals found in lemons that can help promote digestion, reduce heartburn, and reduce bloating by loosening up trapped toxins. Start your day off with some lemon water, and then again later if you feel your digestive issues are beginning to creep up on you.
Lemons also contain pectin, which is a prebiotic fiber that feeds healthy gut bacteria and the citric acid helps to improve urination and aids in breaking down substances in the gut.
Honey (It shouldn't come from a bear bottle)- Raw honey is a potent prebiotic that nourishes the good bacteria in the intestines. It contains oligosaccharides, which are simple sugars linked together, which are not digested in the digestive tract. They are passed down to the colon where they ferment and eventually become "friendly" bacteria that aids in digesting dietary fiber, preventing gut infections, and produces vitamins essential for the health of your gut. Honey also is an effective treatment for Helicobacter pylori bacteria, which is a common cause for stomach ulcers.
Not all honey is the same, and most honey is....not honey at all. Corporations are great at
taking the taste of something, stripping out all of the nutrients, then selling you the shell of what it originally was. If you see honey sold in a bear or honeycomb- shaped bottles, chances
are it is filled with sugar and artificial coloring. Authentic honey will have one ingredient- honey! They are more expensive then the on sale bearbottled honey, but these products have all of the vitamins and nutrients that make honey the superfood we know it as!
